What Can Pain Management Do For Me?

One of the most common questions that we hear is “what can pain management do for me?” It is a far too common occurrence for people to be told that, because of their age or other factors, they’ll need to get used to living with severe pain. So when the subject of pain management comes up, a bit of skepticism is understandable. The goal of pain management is to minimize pain, allowing you to feel better and to live the life that you choose.

Trust the Process

The process of managing pain starts with a consultation. Every person is unique, and so are their conditions. That’s why we take a team approach to pain management. At the Center for Spine, Joint & Neuromuscular Rehab, we are able to treat a wide range of issues in one place. Our patients tell us that this makes their life easier versus having to travel to different locations for treatment.

The next step is to diagnose the source of your pain. The could include steps like physical examinations, x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, myelograms or ultrasounds. You’ve already told us that you’re in pain, when the pain started, and what makes it better or worse. Now it’s our job to find out what’s causing the pain to happen.

Once we’ve found the root cause of your pain, your practitioner will discuss the methods that they recommend to treat it. You might talk about physical therapy, trigger-point injections, radio frequency ablation, behavioral therapy, medication, or a combination of treatments.

This is a proven, successful process, from talking about to finding the source of, and then finally treating your pain. Although your treatment may look different that what someone else has prescribed to them, the process that they went through should be almost identical.

Setting Expectations

Some pain management works immediately. Other interventions take some time. Your practitioner will discuss the timeline that you can expect, and what to look for after you leave the office. Remember, our goal is to help you live a better life by managing your pain. That means that you may still have some pain, but it should no longer prevent you from doing what you love.

Many patients have spent months or years with only medication for treatment. While we believe in using medication when it is indicated and necessary, it is far from the only way to move forward. The addictive nature and side effects of medication may cause more harm than good. Expect to have a conversation with your practitioner about the best possible pain interventions for you.

Our Focus Is On You

At the Center for Spine, Joint & Neuromuscular rehab, we aren’t just focused on your chronic pain. We take a holistic approach. We focus on you as a total person. That includes your mental well being, your goals, and the life that you want to live. Our goal is to treat your pain so that you can continue to live that life, and to do so with as little pain as possible.
